TimeLogic - Active Motif Active Motif, Inc., (Carlsbad, CA) develops assays to speed the understanding of cellular function, and also designs the TimeLogic® biocomputing products to expedite gene and protein sequence comparisons. The TimeLogic products run optimized software using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) circuit boards installed within a desktop computer or server. These FPGA accelerator cards utilize less than 20 Watts of electricity (1/10th of a typical CPU), yet process high-demand bioinformatics applications at the speed hundreds to thousands of CPUs. This makes the TimeLogic solutions an environmentally friendly and economical alternative to clusters for compute-intensive tasks such as metagenomics analysis. A recent analysis of the GOS data set was performed by Dr. Gerard Manning and Dr. Yufeng Zhai of The Salk Institute. Utilizing an 8-card TimeLogic DeCypher system, they analyzed 30 million sequences using Hidden Markov Model (HMM) methods in two weeks. Dr Manning commented that if they had been limited to using a standard computer, this task would have taken well over a century.
