In his research, Luke is passionate about helping people and solving problems by applying machine learning and deep learning to wearable medical technologies. Luke has been a researcher in the lab since his freshman year at UNT and will be graduating in May 2021 with his master’s degree in computer engineering. As a lab member, he’s worked on INSTRUMENT | One Antarctic Night, ATLAS in Silico, 3D Segmentation and HCI research, Elemental Mayhem, and more!
Outside of the lab, Luke loves games of all sorts. Whether it’s a board game like Magic the Gathering or a video game like Dota, he’s down to play. He also enjoys creating pixel art in his free time.
Here’s a quick Q + A to get to know more about Luke’s experience as a member of the lab and her life outside of it:
Q: What motivates you to pursue art + science research?
A: I feel like people are so scared to accept that art and science complement each other and I want to help others see the connection. Art helps communicate and innovate science and science helps to analyze and create art. Both are important.
Q: What is your most memorable, meaningful, proud, or fun experience at the lab?
A: When I was a freshman, we had a lab party where we played the game Mafia and I “killed” the entire lab because nobody thought that I could be the bad guy. I’m also very proud of contributing to several xREZ publications on 3D Segmentation and other topics.
Q: What is your most meaningful, memorable, proud, or fun experience in your life?
A: My most meaningful experience has been meeting my boyfriend in-person after dating online long distance for five years.
Q: What is something about you that might surprise your labmates?
A: I’m really into theme parks and rollercoaster research and that’s what got me into science for the first time.
Q: What are your hobbies outside of the lab?
A: I love board games, video games, and making pixel art. Some of my favorite games are Magic the Gathering, Dota 2, and Final Fantasy 14.
Q: What is your favorite book?
A: Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: The Martian and Interstellar
Q: What is your favorite place to visit?
A: I used to visit a game store that I love every other week and I miss it.
Q: Who is your favorite musical artist?
A: Savant and Daft Punk
Q: What is your favorite charitable cause?
